Retail Strategy

JOHN IBBOTSON helps retailers with Retail Strategy

Dear Retailer

Have you a plan, policy or an approach to improve your existing retail business or exploit a new one.

What is your Retail Strategy?  How do you make it happen?

First ask yourself 3 basic questions

Where do you want to go?

Where are you now?

How do you make it happen?

Lets go into more detail and ask some more questions.

Where do you want to go? It helps if you can identify a business maybe a competitor who you would like to use as a role model.

What are you aiming for?

What are your objectives?

Are there several strategic options?

In what areas do you need to increase performance?

How do you measure performance?

What are the risks?

Where are you now? Be brutally honest, take a step back from the day to day running of your business and look at what you really are and why you need to change.

What is happening in your market?

What is happening in your company?

What do your shareholders, colleagues and staff require?

Why do you need to take action?

How do you make it happen? You need an action plan to get you from where you are now to where you want to be. The action plan will help you to:-

Acquire and utilize resources and skills

Develop the appropriate structure

Implement new systems

Take corrective action

Measure performance

The questions in Where are you know? shouldn't be to difficult to answer.

Where do you want to go? may take some more thought.

How do you to make it happen? that's the hardest question of the 3, so

ask some more questions

  • Have you a clear business goal.

  • Do you know the steps to be taken to achieve this goal?

Here are 3 steps to get there.

  • Find out who your Customers are.
  • Discover what they want
  • Establish what needs to be done to deliver to your customer

It’s just another way of asking the question, “What do I need to do, to give the customers what they want?”

Answer the question and you have your Strategy.

Answer the question and its gives you a plan of action to improve your existing business or exploit a new one
